NAME STUDY · SOURCE-REVIEWED

Hana
ハナ

Two light units: ha-na. The first vowel is an open a; English Hana and Hannah vary by speaker. This is not a promise of an identical pronunciation.

Hana offers a useful meeting point between a spoken name and an ordinary Japanese word. 花 can be read hana as the word for a flower, and the cited survey also records it as a given-name spelling. That does not mean every person called Hana or Hannah shares the same name origin. If the floral association matters to you, say so as your own reason for choosing it.

Attested Japanese name spelling

花 · hana / はな

Recorded as a name in the cited survey. This is not an official translation of every foreign name with the same Roman spelling.

Literal character meaning

花 — Flower / blossom

Interpretation & limits
Flower is the direct gloss. A memory of a person, a particular bloom or a season can be personal symbolism; 花 alone does not specify any of those details.
Reading & unintended associations
花 also appears in ordinary words and descriptions. It will not identify a particular person without context.

Tattoo perspective

The single character keeps the composition focused. Review the small strokes and the balance of the upper and lower parts at the actual tattoo size. A floral association does not require adding a flower illustration.
